Robots

This activity, contributes to...
  • Practise decoding visual messages.
  • Develop symbolic thinking.
  • Foster the ability to take turns and listen to others.
  • Develop self regulation.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE ACTIVITY

1. Sit in a semi-circle,  we explain that we control the Robot by using different
sounds:
- Clapping (or some other sounds e.g. tambourine, drum, etc.) activates Robot.
- Quick, loud sounds make Robot move quickly.
- Slow and soft sounds make Robot walk on the spot. lf the sound is very slow
and quiet then Robot stands still.
Put Robot away, and then show a card with a long strip and a short one. Explain that the long strip means make a loud noise and the short one means make a soft noise.
Next, give each child a tambourine (or some other percussion instrument) and
ask them to remind you what the long and the short strips represent.
Then, to play the sounds shown on the card, show another card with two long and two short strips and discuss what the card shows (two loud notes and two soft ones); play the sounds and then collect the instruments.

2.  Get Robot out and give a child an instrument. show a new card and ask the child to play the pattern s/he can see. The other children help by watching and listening to make sure that Robot gets the correct instructions.
when a child finishes a pattern correcily, move Robot as directed and give the child a counter. lf the pattern isn't correct ask another child to have a try. Continue until all the children have at least 2 counters.
