This activity is essential to:
- Expore spatial concepts.
- Show that we can use symbols to represent real objects.
- Arrange substitute shapes on a piece of paper to represent a simple room layout.
DEVELOPMET OF THE ACTIVITY
1. Arrange some furniture in a room in a doll's house as shown bellow:
Next, show Amanda to the children, and say to them, that she is giving a Birthday party! Everyone is having fun, excepts Teddy. He is crying in a corner. She asks why he is upset, and Teddy explains that Amanda has such a lovely room that he wants to arrange his furniture at home exactly the same way.
However, he lives so far away that by the time he gets home, he will have forgotten how to do it!
Ask the children for their ideas about how to help Teddy remember the furniture arrangement and help them reach the conclusion that Teddy needs a plan.
2. Show the children the substitute paper shapes and help them decide which shape can best represent the different pieces of forniture (the children have to face the same direction).
3. Give each child a set of shapes and ask them to arrange the shapes on card to represent the layout of the furniture.
